Strange Things Can Pop Up From Time To Time…

We seem to have had some weird weather last year and as a result of that, some very strange mushrooms popped out of our lawn in the back yard. I captured some photos of this strange looking thing as it grew.brainmushroom1 The bigger it got, the more it looked like a brain! It was very weird looking.brainmushroom2 I tried to get a photo from all sides.brainmushroom3 It kind of freaked me out when I first saw it and let it get as big as it could, until the day came when it got mowed into pieces! It was  fun watching it grow.brainmushroom4 Last year was my first year in many, many years that I decided to try growing carrots. I chose a seed from a local seed company called Pine Tree Garden Seeds. The carrot seeds were called Rainbow Carrot seeds. I was anticipating many colorful carrot roots but I got much more than that. The colorful carrots came out of the ground as deformed alien looking creatures. One of them or should I say two were joined together in an amorous lock! It was pretty funny and I hated to even cook them!carrotlovers1  Arms wrapped tightly and in two colors!carrotlovers2 They were locked in love.carrotlovers3 Have you ever seen anything like this?  Next we got the flying alien carrots….flyingstub3 Short legs, fat heads and a long tail…flyingstubcarrot1 they looked like they were growing babies!flyingstubcarrot2 The gourds came out of the garden very hungry and tried to attack some of my beautiful tomatoes!hungrygourds Mothers teaching babies how to suck my red tomatoes dry!thegourdfamily They started ganging up on my other veggies in numbers….peeking in basketsmotherandchildgourd and appearing everywhere! Some were very strange looking and I wasn’t sure what to call them?lategourds Swan gourds? Cave man club gourds?veryweirdgourds They looked like they had veins popping out of their skins!harvestgourds There were so many they had to go in a big box on the deck. It was a fun year for unusual vegetables. I  enjoyed sharing them with family and friends and look forward to new alien creatures for 2009. Did you have any odd creatures in your garden last year?? What joy I have growing things                  !farmer_hoe_garden_lg_wht

Looking at those vegetable pictures is giving me such a childhood flashback. When I were children, my sister would refuse to eat any fruit or vegetable that she thought was cute until after she took a picture of it. But then my mother got to the point where she was sick of my sister wasting film on pictures of apples and tomatoes and told her to stop. So she would sneak the camera out anyway and take a picture, and my mother had no idea until she got the film developed and then she would say, "Alright, that's it. Who took a picture of a potato?"

Too funny, I don't blame those gourds for attacking the tomatoes, they look de-lious! I'm TRY--ing carrots this year again, usually they stunt to nothing, I'm hoping for one that looks like a segmented catapillar! Oh well...

What fun! Those carrots were a riot! The cave man gourds are great for birdhouses! Dried and hollowed out:)

I'm so jealous that you can grow things. But those carrots? They're kinda creeping me out. LOL

Angie: I just LOVE that "Alright who took a picture of a potato!"
Dawn: Thanks! It was a good tomato year. We planted an heirloom called Brandywine. Carrots love a sandy soil. The hard part is planting those teeny weeny seeds!
FSOF: Oh I never thought of bird houses for those gourds! They did tend to rot quite quickly? I will look that up...thanks!
GS: Oh Jane...you should have seen my face when I pulled them out of the ground! I ran into the house with them to show my husband. What is that?...he said!
SMB: Oh come on...a little ol carrot! Wait until you see pictures of my tomato hornworms that show up every year and I have to personally annihilate them one by one! LOL
Michelle: Great idea! I will try that this year if I get any weirdos coming out of the ground!
GeeGee: Awe shucks...thanks my friend.:) I am glad I made you laugh but of course you and I do that well....all the time on the phone!!
Tess: Of course you could!! Actually carrots are fun because you never know what is going to come out of the ground!

What strange veggies..those carrots are so, so, uh....amorous. I can't grow a thing. I don't know what is wrong with me. I have an african violet plant that was given to me..somehow it is still alive, but in the whole year and half I have had it...not one blossum. I am so envious of your ladies with a green thumb. And that mushroom! When my niece was little she used to call them, "icky-mush"...I think that name applies. Good to visit you my dear friend in Southern Maine!! Hugs, Kathleen

Oh Kathleen...I wish I could convince you that you really can grow things...especially a garden! All you need is some good manure and you know we have plenty of that in Maine! Ahem! Have it tilled into the soil and just start planting...really...you won't believe your eyes. The hard part is the weeding...keeping up with it. Thanks for stopping by my friend.:)
