Strange Things Can Pop Up From Time To Time…

   We seem to have had some weird weather last year and as a result of that, some very strange mushrooms popped out of our lawn in the back yard. I captured some photos of this strange looking thing as it grew. The bigger it got, the more it looked like a brain! It was very weird looking. I tried to get a photo from all sides. It kind of freaked me out when I first saw it and let it get as big as it could, until the day came when it got mowed into pieces! It was  fun watching it grow. Last year was my first year in many, many years that I decided to try growing carrots. I chose a seed from a local seed company called Pine Tree Garden Seeds. The carrot seeds were called Rainbow Carrot seeds. I was anticipating many colorful carrot roots but I got much more than that. The colorful carrots came out of the ground as deformed alien looking creatures. One of them or should I say two were joined together in an amorous lock! It was pretty funny and I hated to even cook them!  Arms wrapped tightly and in two colors! They were locked in love. Have you ever seen anything like this?  Next we got the flying alien carrots…. Short legs, fat heads and a long tail… they looked like they were growing babies! The gourds came out of the garden very hungry and tried to attack some of my beautiful tomatoes! Mothers teaching babies how to suck my red tomatoes dry! They started ganging up on my other veggies in numbers….peeking in baskets and appearing everywhere! Some were very strange looking and I wasn’t sure what to call them? Swan gourds? Cave man club gourds? They looked like they had veins popping out of their skins! There were so many they had to go in a big box on the deck. It was a fun year for unusual vegetables. I  enjoyed sharing them with family and friends and look forward to new alien creatures for 2009.
